Support during long-term or critical illness

Sometimes life can be challenging. Living with a long-term condition or experiencing a period of illness may mean you need to consider and review your finances.

Caring for someone else may also mean you need our support.

We want you to feel comfortable getting in touch with us as soon as you feel able.

We’re here to help

We will take the time to listen to your situation, to understand what you’re going through and provide personal support tailored to you. When discussing your circumstances with us you can include a member of your family, close friend or authorised third party or carer if you wish.

What we can do to help

  • Give you one-to-one support regarding each of your Bank of Ireland products.
  • Talk through your worries and see if there are ways we can help you manage your money.
  • Let you know how family, friends or carers may be able help you manage your accounts. If you would like someone else to help you this can be arranged by completing our third party mandate form.
  • Give you practical support to help you take back control of your money if you have experienced domestic, financial or economic abuse.
  • Work with you to review your income and outgoings.
  • Support you to put in place a personalised plan for the future, based on your financial situation and circumstances.

What you might wish to consider

  • Find out if you may be eligible for benefits to support you. See Useful Contacts for details.
  • If you have insurance policies check with your provider how these may help you.
  • Check with Citizens Advice or your local tax office to see if your tax status is affected.
  • Make sure your employer is aware of your changing circumstances.
  • If you have pension arrangements in place check with your provider how these may support you.
  • Engage with organisations that specialise in your condition. They will be able to offer advice and guidance.
  • Consider whether a formal legal arrangement for someone to help support you may be necessary for the future. For example a Power of Attorney (POA).
  • If you think you may fall behind with priority household bills or other financial commitments contact the companies concerned as soon as you are able.
  • Contact MoneyHelper for free and easy to access information and advice at: moneyhelper.org.uk.
  • Consider using a spending tracker app to help you budget for additional expenses such as travel to medical appointments. You can find these readily available online.
  • Carefully consider any investment or alternative income scheme carefully. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Speak to your family or a trusted friend before making any decisions.
