APR
APR stands for Annual Percentage Rate (variable). The APR is an annual percentage expressing the total charge for credit. It includes interest and any additional fees (we don’t charge additional fees). The APR allows you to compare the cost of the overdraft with other providers or other types of borrowing.
33.50%
39.15%
Our Clear overdraft interest rate is variable and made of two parts: the Bank of Ireland UK base rate which from 7 February 2025 is 4.50% and a margin rate of 29%. It will change if either part changes.
Any changes to either of these parts will normally take effect immediately but if we increase the margin rate we’ll give you 60 days’ notice.
How much does my overdraft cost in pounds and pence?
As an example, the interest cost of borrowing £500 is:
7 days
30 days
60 days
£3.21
£13.95
£28.29
The 60-day example includes the interest charged in the first 30 days.
You can use our overdraft cost calculator to find out how much it would cost to borrow for different amounts of time and you can find out how likely you are to be approved by using our overdraft eligibility tool.

We don't charge a monthly fee for maintaining the account, but charges can apply:
If you try to make a payment when there is not enough money or enough of an overdraft to cover it then the payment will usually be declined. You will be charged a fee if this happens.
Unpaid Transaction Fee
£1.50 for each item we refuse to pay and this will be charged monthly. We will tell you about this charge before it is charged.
In the unlikely case that we make the payment, this will create an unarranged overdraft on your account. Unpaid transaction fees can be completely avoided by making sure there is enough money in your account to cover all your bills and payments. The monthly cap on unarranged overdraft charges for your personal current account is £30.00. You can find more details here.
For using your card to make transactions in a foreign currency. Please check the debit cards section for full details.
For some extra services that you may you ask us to provide. These are usually charged at the time we provide the service. For the list of these services and their pricing, please see our Schedule of Service Charges and Charges Explained brochure above.
